ABOUT EASTERN NEW ENERGY

Eastern New Energy (ENE) is a three-year regional support programme – focusing on low/zero carbon actions and local economic development.

The programme is designed to help local enterprises (private and social) and other organisations across the region understand and remove the barriers that we all face in rapidly decarbonising our communities, buildings, transport, and lives.

At the same time we will support you to take full advantage of the business opportunities that are emerging in low carbon and environmental growth markets.

The programme covers the counties of Hertfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Norfolk, Suffolk, Rutland and parts of Lincolnshire and Essex.

COMMUNITY WORKS’ ROLE

Community Works has over ten years’ experience of successfully delivering ERDF (low carbon/economic development) programmes across the country and are working closely with Lead Partner, UEL, and all other delivery partners to support the Eastern New Energy (ENE) programme.

We are also developing and supporting the ENE Research/Innovation Clusters; as well as providing support to individual SMEs – both energy/building users as well as suppliers of low carbon products and services.

How we can help

  • Support for organisations as energy users – energy efficiency, renewable energy generation and storage
  • Support for innovation and development of low carbon products, technologies and services
  • Grants for SMEs (private and social enterprises)
  • Preparing and implementing “Net Zero Carbon” action plans
  • Climate Emergency planning – for Councils, Universities, NHS and other public sector organisations

Who we can help

  • Small and Medium enterprises (SMEs) private and social enterprise
  • Building and construction industry
  • Vehicle fleet operators
  • Local Authorities and other public sector
  • Parish and Town Councils
  • Community groups/organisations
  • Households

Affordable zero carbon housing

  • One workstream is focusing on delivering zero-carbon affordable housing
  • Beside the severe shortage of affordable housing (even at modest environmental performance levels), nobody can currently supply both zero carbon and true affordability in the same solution – whether with modern methods (MMC) or traditional construction
  • In this workstream, we are working with those with a need to build and provide affordable zero-carbon housing, and wish to participate/collaborate in the ENE project to deliver the initial schemes

Project delivery

The project delivery team – consisting of 20 partners – includes a wide range of low carbon and business development specialists who are ready to assist across the East of England region. This includes specialists in energy, utilities and infrastructure; building and construction ; innovation incubators; low carbon finance and investment; digital systems (GIS, geospatial big data and analytics, IoT/smart cities applications, AI, and coordinating community action using digital platforms); as well as universities, local authorities and community organisations.

Led by the University of East London, the £10.2m project started delivery in 2020 and lasts for three years. Results from the East of England Region will inform plans to remove similar barriers across the UK.
