Project Description
HOUSING
There is a critical shortage of good quality, affordable housing.
Much new housing is of poor quality, energy inefficient and powered by fossil fuels.
Many existing homes are in poor condition and need deep retrofits to reduce energy use and improve habitability.
Housing is a Government policy priority. However, it cannot solve this problem alone, and the construction sector is unable or unwilling to deliver sustainable, affordable housing at the rate the country needs to meet housing demand.
There is an urgent need for transformative change in housing provision. To deliver this change, we need:
- Political will at local authority level
- Practical, affordable housing delivery solutions from the construction sector
- Acceptance among house-buyers and tenants of:
- New materials
- New construction methods
- New business models that deliver:
- affordable, sustainable housing
- long term social, economic and environmental value for local communities and wider society
- Planning policy that supports sustainable and affordable developments
- Finance to develop and test new materials and methods
Affordable zero carbon housing in the Eastern New Energy project
- One workstream is focusing on delivering zero-carbon affordable housing
- Beside the severe shortage of affordable housing (even at modest environmental performance levels), nobody can currently supply both zero carbon and true affordability in the same solution – whether with modern methods (MMC) or traditional construction
- In this workstream, we are working with those with a need to build and provide affordable zero-carbon housing, and wish to participate/collaborate in the ENE project to deliver the initial schemes

Community Works is collaborating with a range of partners and stakeholders to address these challenges and support innovators that are delivering solutions for the future.
